The “satisfaction” of owning a must-have collector’s car

You can always get what you want, if what you want is Keith Richards’’ 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT and you happen to have several hundred thousand dollars lying around.

Start me up

Today, May 9th, this car and rock and roll collectors dream is up for auction at Coy auction house in England. Before ending up under Keith Richards thumb, this car started as the brainchild of Enzo Ferrari’s son Alfredino, and was not even really supposed to be marketed as a Ferrari, but with the premature death of Alfredino, this model was named Dino in his honor. At that time, the mid-engine six-cylinder layout was a radical departure for the Ferrari. But don’t let the 2.4 liter V6 engine fool you; this beauty has amazingly well-balanced handling, considering this was Ferraris first mid-engine design.

The Dino quickly became a “must have” for any car connoisseur in the 1970’s, so it is not that surprising that one of the world’s greatest guitarists, song writers and rock and roll legends quickly swooped up this exquisitely styled 1972 Ferrari Dino. Keith Richards purchased this car new in California in February of 1972, and kept it for 14 years, covering over 25,000 miles before letting it go in 1986.

Paint it black…and argento

Porsche interior

This Dino is possibly one of the most distinguished of all, with one of the most attractive subtle color combinations you could ask for: Argento (silver) coachwork with a black leather interior. Not to mention the period-correct Cromodoro alloy wheels where the motor car sits. And, remarkably, after four decades the odometer still only shows 28,000 miles, which means that the new lucky owner of this jewel still has a lot of operational life left in their new collector’s item. So, the jack, spare wheel and a rare original tool roll, may just come in handy when the Dino heads out of the road for a rare Sunday joy-ride.
